Accutire MS-4445B Programmable Talking Tire Gauge with Lighted Tip and Storage Case Review

Accutire MS-4445B Programmable Talking Tire Gauge with Lighted Tip and Storage CaseThis gauge appears to work well and the 'voice' feature is handy as is the 'programmable' feature. However, I agree with prior reviewers' comment that one needs 'good aim' to get a good seal. I've been checking tires for 50 years and still need precise positioning to keep air from escaping while trying to check it!I'm not sure why this is such a problem - Accutire needs to come up with a better nozzle design.

Fix-A-Flat - Tire Inflator with Hose, 16 oz., Case of 6 (S420-6-C) Review

Fix-A-Flat - Tire Inflator with Hose, 16 oz., Case of 6This product works great from my experience. But depending on the damage, this product will not work on damages particularly if the damage is on the side wall. You will need to rotate the wheel to make sure the solution goes into the puncture. Also, I would imagine that bigger holes will not be fixed by this method.

The main idea is that you do not have to be strong person or such handy man to get going after suffering from a flat tire. You don't need an air pump/compressor as it also pumps some air into the tire. After attaching the can and pumping in the liquid, your tire will be off the ground about a few inches and you can drive 2 to 4 miles carefully to the closest gas station. Then you can have them fixed the tire, or if you don't have the time, you can put some more air to what is recommended and you are good to go.

I have been driving for 17 years now and I had 3 chances to use this product. The last time was last week, when my wife called me that the left rear tire of our Acura MDX was flat. Luckily it was just a couple of blocks away from the house where my wife drop my kids to school bus. Some products you may need to remove (unscrew) something from the valve, this one you don't have to remove anything, it has a built-in tube that you directly attach to the valve.

The whole can is gone in less than a minute. The solution looks like white foam which you can see passing through the clear transparent tube. You can see the tire rises up in just a few seconds after pressing the button. Our tire is big, it raised up the tire a couple of inches from the ground but obviously the rim is off the ground. I then have to used a portable pump to add more air into it. Initially it registered as 12.5 psi. I then pumped more air until it reached around 31 psi. 2 days after, the tire is still good. I am just waiting for my new tire to be delivered and I will replace the tire which anyway is just about close to the end of its life. The label on the can also recommend to have your tire professionally repaired at your earliest convenience.

Cons:
- freezes in cold weather

Fix-A-Flat - Tire Inflator with Hose, 16 oz. (S420-6) Review

Fix-A-Flat - Tire Inflator with Hose, 16 oz.IN A NUTSHELL:

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN IT'S RAINING & YOUR TIRE GOES FLAT IN WAL-MART'S PARKING LOT?

This happened to me today and I was scared out of my wits. I had an hour to get home before my six-year-old son got off the school bus. I was 25 miles away and I just saw my rear tire and knew it had no air in it. I recalled using this product about 6 years ago and that it worked, so I ran into Wal-Mart and skipped the items I had come shopping for and went straight to the automotive section to hunt for this stuff. Twenty minutes later, standing in the parking lot, I read the directions and realized that I had to try to find what was leaking and remove it if possible. After breaking a small screwdriver and bending a key for a car we sold 5 years ago, I managed to remove a nail that was about 4 inches long -- the trouble was that the rest of the air leaked out rather quickly once I pulled out the nail.

READ AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!

The directions on the can stated that the valve stem had to be in the 8 o'clock position so I had my teenage daughter back the car up until the valve stem was at the 8 o'clock position. I shook the can for over 30 seconds as Angela timed me, then I screwed the hose attachment into the valve stem. It whooshed as a stream of white, foamy liquid rushed through the transparent tubing into the tire. I could hear air rushing in with it but then I recalled what had actually happened the last time I used this stuff about 6 years ago.

You guessed it, the hole was towards the top of the tire and the foam never got there allowing the air to simply escape very nosily out the hole. Since the flat was in the rear of my front-drive Plymouth Voyager Minivan, I drove it to a gas station that I knew had air, about 6 miles away. I went about 25 mph and many people hailed me as they drove alongside to inform me that I had a flat tire.

BUT THEN SOMETHING GOOD HAPPENED

By the time I reached the Chevron Station with the air, still some 20 miles from our home, I was convinced that I had turned the flat tire into spaghetti and that we would miss the bus. Well, I am happy to report that this was not the case. From traveling slowly, the tire had circulated that white sealant foam and had heated up some due to the extra friction caused by running without air. I filled the tire up and to my surprise there was no sound of escaping air. The sealant held and I drove, at a somewhat reduced speed, the remaining 18-20 miles in about 38 minutes to get home about 2 minutes ahead of the bus.

BOTTOM LINE: HAVE AN AIR SOURCE NEARBY IF YOU PULL OUT THE NAIL

This stuff does work, but after you pull out a nail from your tire it may be rather difficult to get it to hold the air before it can circulate and heat up within the tire. This was my actual experience with this exact product today, and it is consistent with what happened 6 years ago. In short, have an air supply lined-up when you insert the sealant as close as possible to where you remove the nail and insert the sealant. This will reduce the risk of running the tire flat and rendering it unserviceable. If you do this, you stand an excellent chance of executing a fast emergency repair that anybody can manage and, like me, you too might save the day.

[I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH ANY PRODUCT OR COMPANY.]

Slime 40003 Smart Spair Tire Sealant and Inflator Kit Review

Slime 40003 Smart Spair Tire Sealant and Inflator KitI bought this kit as a "spare spare" for my SUV.You never know when one spare is enough and getting out of the back country is important.

It has everythong I need, but the inflator (air pump) is too wimpy. The warnings instruct:

1. Do not operate for more than 8 minutes continuously.
2. Allow compressor to cool 25 minutes between uses.

It's probably good enough for a car, but I'm getting a more capable compressor for the SUV.I don't care if it pumps slow, as long as it won't break if I forget to set a timer.

The other troubling thing is the warning to run the compressor only with the engine turned off.Over voltage protection isn't that expensive and I don't want to risk discharging my battery. When far from civilization, a dead battery is worse than a flat tire.

HI-TEC DIGITAL TIRE GAUGE Review

HI-TEC DIGITAL TIRE GAUGEI bought this to use on a BMW motorcycle because it has awkward access to the pressure valve on the rims. It works beautifully and the spoken measurement is very handy when you can't see the readout. The readings are consistent with other gauges which I believe to be accurate so all in all this is a solid product and works as described.

Slime 10011 Tubeless Automotive Tire Sealant - 16 oz. Review

Slime 10011 Tubeless Automotive Tire Sealant - 16 oz.It was getting to the point that I was filling my tires 2 to 3 times a week. I took the worst of the tires and soaped it up. The leaking was coming from around the bang-on rim weight. I called up my local tire repair shop and they wanted $25+ to dismount, clean and remount the tire to fix the rim-leak. Since all four tires were leaking, it would cost me over $100 (with tax, etc.) to have all tires done. Then, I remembered Slime, and asked a guy at the auto parts store if it worked. He said that his tires were leaking like a sieve all around the side-walls, which Slime fixed. IMPORTANT: He said NOT to follow the instructions on the bottle and, instead, put in 8oz per tire for 24 in. tires. That is roughly 60% more than recommended according to the instructions on the bottle.

I was able to buy a 32oz bottle for around $9.00 where I live. When I got home, I got a ruler, placed the bottle upright on a flat surface and measured the amount of liquid in the bottle. I made 4 marks on the side of the bottle with an indelible marker -- dividing the contents into 4 parts (if the label goes all the way around the bottle with no gap, you will have to peel some of the label off so you can mark the bottle directly and see the remaining level of fluid inside as you squeeze the contents into each tire). I then took out my hydraulic jack; jacked up one side of the car in order to relieve the weight on the tires when deflated, then removed the valve from the stems in the two tires on that side. After all air was out of the tires, I squeezed in 1/4 (8oz) of the bottle into each tire, screwed the valve back into the stems, re-inflated the tires and dropped the car back onto the garage floor. I repeated this procedure with the other side of the car. All-in-all, it didn't take me more than 30 minutes to deflate all four tires, squeeze the slime in and re-fill them with air.

I then took the car out for a drive -- to work the Slime into all the crevices of the tire and rim. There was an immediate difference; and, within a few days of driving (because it takes time to work the slime into all the nooks and crannies) there were no more severe leaks. It was the first time I was able to go for more than a week without having to fill my tires. After 3-4 weeks, the tires are holding air and I don't even have to top them off anymore.

Interestingly, just last week before Christmas, I noticed that one of the tires on my wife's car was flat. Luckily, I noticed it while it was still sitting in the garage. I filled it up with air, and it was flat the next morning. I filled it up again, and it was flat that evening (it was getting worse real fast). I took the tire off and soaped it up like I did on my car. Wow! There were leaks all around both the inside and outside rim (must be all the salt and below-zero weather). So, like I did to my car, I slimed it and filled it up with air. I drove it around for about 10 minutes and parked it. A few days later, it still read the same pressure as I put in it a few days earlier after I slimed it. A few days later, I did the other three tires.

As I figure it, I saved over $200 in rim-cleaning & remounting costs for 8-tires with two $9.00 32oz bottles of Slime.

Also, be aware, that since there is so much slime in the tires (way more than the directions say to use, as explained above following the instructions from the auto-parts guy), at speeds over 35-40 mph, the tires will be a bit unbalanced for about a mile until the slime evens out from centrifugal force -- something that I have no problem living with, since it saved me over $200. After about a mile, everything smoothes out and the wheels automatically fall back into balance (kind of like those centrifugal balancing weights used on 18-wheelers). I have driven at speeds up to 65 mph for long durations with no noticeable shimmy or bounce after the slime re-balances itself inside the tires.

Milton S448 Tire Tread Depth Gauge Review

Milton S448 Tire Tread Depth GaugeI bought this because I can' find them anywhere in any local auto parts vendor.I use it to determine when to replace my tires and measure my tires for winter traction (4/32" minimum for snow - tire tread visual indicators are 2/32" so they are useless to me) so no more guessing or finding those lincoln pennies for me.It works very well but is a little messy since the shaft oil rubs all over your fingers.I keep it safely stored away from dust in my toolbox.

Accutire MS-4350B Programmable Digital Tire Gauge Review

Accutire MS-4350B Programmable Digital Tire GaugeThe Accutire "Setpoint Tire Gauge," model MS-4350B from "MSI Sensors" (aka "MS-4350: Digital Set Point Programmable..." from "Measurement Specialties"), UPC 1550710566, has seven nice features.First, it's easy to hold. The bottom of the larger-than-usual body is rubberized, and the shape allows you to firmly press it onto a tire valve stem with a thumb.Second, there is an LED light activated by a big round button on the back.Third, the screen is backlit and the numbers are large.Fourth, there is no need to turn it on/off.Instead, you can push the nozzle onto the valve, and it displays the measurement; about 15 seconds later, it turns itself off.Fifth, it beeps when an accurate reading is taken.Sixth, the two CR2032 lithium batteries will presumably last a long time, and can be replaced if they wear out. Finally, if you keep forgetting how much air is needed, you can program separate front & rear target pressures.

UNFORTUNATELY, it's hard to obtain a solid seal on valves. It's the same problem noted here and in reviews of "Accutire MS-4000B Deluxe Backlit Lithium Digital Tire Gauge" on Amazon.com. One September 24, 2004, review there by "Crazy Dude" says "because you're pressing plastic (the gauge) against metal (the tire air stem), you must hold it perfectly flush or air will escape, making a reading difficult to get."

So to improve my gauge I more-or-less followed the instructions of "Crazy Dude," which were: "I used '3M Scotch linerless rubber splicing tape.' The thickness is important. I used .03 in. (.761mm). I wouldn't go any thicker. ...All you need to do is cut it to the diameter of the inside of the gauge's mouth, then cut out a small hole for the air hole."

Since my home has no rubber tape, I took a wide pink rubber band (from a bunch of broccoli) about 0.75mm thick.I cut a gasket about 7.5mm diameter with a 3mm hole and glued it in place. Now it works like a charm. If you have the time to make this modification, buy it from Amazon.com!
