Security Chain - Radial Chain for Passenger Cars, pair (use SC1030) (CH2311T) Review

Security Chain - Radial Chain for Passenger Cars, pairI used these tire chains just once to get up a paved, hilly road with a sheet of ice on it.I was driving about 5-10 MPH and made it up the hill just fine. However, I was pretty surprised to see that one of the cross cables had snapped with just this one incredibly brief use.The broken chain is now useless.(I had to park at the bottom of the hill and walk up for the next few days until the ice melted). I would not trust these tire chains and would strongly discourage anyone from buying them. The tire chains do come with a one year warranty, but I bought them years ago and only needed them this one time. For an item such as tire chains, a one year warranty doesn't seem to make much sense.I wish that I could have rated these tire chains with zero stars.

Radial Chain is the "original" cable chain traction product for passenger cars

Originally designed to save sidewall wear on radial tires, Radial Chain (CH Series) was the first real brand name in "cable chain" winter traction products.

Radial Chains "consumer friendly" features caused rapid growth in popularity and today its still recognized as a market leader in:
Low operating space requirements (around drive tires).
Simple mounting and removal, due to its low weight.
Improved starting, stopping and cornering performance.

Security Chain Company QG2821 Quik Grip V-Bar Type LRS Light Truck Traction Chain - Set of 2 Review

Security Chain Company QG2821 Quik Grip V-Bar Type LRS Light Truck Traction Chain - Set of 2I live in Washington state and always been concerned about traction needs in the winter months. Many people like the "cable" type of tire chains since they are "springy" and it makes installing them easier (versus actual "chains" like these that don't stay straight across the tire, are much heavier, etc). However, I was with some others when we ended up sliding off the road.We instantly intalled some of those "cable" type chains for trying to get back on the road, but the cable that goes in a circle broke instantly at one of the joints (where a cable going across the tire joined it).So that instantly made me lose all faith in those styles making me want something that'll hold up in any situation.
These have a small bar welded to each chain link that contacts the road to help give better traction and/or longer life making them more expensive than many others.I did have a set of these where a link broke right where there was one of those welds, so the weld may have weakened it.I've not had that happen again, but haven't used them that many times every year either. The big thing when installing any kind of tire chains is to remember that you want them to be tight and virtually part of the tire while on the road.Don't just drape them over the tire, connect the hooks to the end link of the chains and start driving because they may flop off the tire easily, start whipping your fenders or even catch on things like a brake line ripping the car apart. You want to work all the slack you can out of the chains and end up with the same number of loose links on both sides of the tire.If you end up with 1 or 2 links on each side that can flop around, that's not a big deal, but 3 or more can again damage the car.To contain them, hold the hook, place the end link that can flop around on it, then place the hook in the link that makes it tight and the end one will be trapped. Many OEMs recomend driving a few blocks on them, then checking them again for slack.Besides doing these things, having the "chain tighteners" (that are a huge rubber band) or some short bungee cords to constantly be pulling them tight to the tire helps as well (with those taking out any slack you missed).
With these installed correctly, they will be as good as any others & last as long or longer.

Security Chain Company Super Z6 SZ115, Cable Chain for Passenger Cars, Pickups & SUVs - Set of 2 Review

Security Chain Company Super Z6 SZ115, Cable Chain for Passenger Cars, Pickups & SUVs - Set of 2The virtues:
These are lightweight and compact cable chains, strong and effective enough to get you going. If you're already stuck in snow, you don't have to worry about having to lay out the chains and drive onto them. Just lay 'em flat and link the two segments together at the bottom back of the tire. Bring the two segments up and link them together at the top. Hook on the tensioner and drive away.
The drawbacks:
In real-world conditions (it's cold, it's snowing, it's probably dark) putting these on without preparation isn't fun. You kneel in snow and get your legs wet. Your hands get cold and wet and numb, and it becomes hard to mate the links on the back side of the tire. Just when you're close to done and your strength is giving out, you've got to stretch the rubber tensioner rings onto the chain.
So, practice putting them on under agreeable conditions so you know what you're in for. Stow a waterproof mat to kneel on. Put some packs of chemical hand warmers in the chains' carry bag.
And a hint: you'll be tempted to hook the link pins into the matching holes in a straight line. They won't go. Fit the pin into the slot at a 90-degree angle and turn it straight.
I've got a set of these for each vehicle. I've used 'em four times and never been stranded.

Product Description:
The SCC Super Z6 SZ115 winter traction product offers superior performance for cars, pickups, and SUVs with very limited operating clearance around the drive tires. Be ready for winter driving with an innovative solution that is a step beyond traditional tire chains.
New Design
Based on the "Z" family of products, the Super Z6 is designed for vehicles with restricted clearance around the drive tires. The Super Z6 requires only 6.33 millimeters (.25 inches) of sidewall clearance to operate, less than half the space required by most cable and tire chains.

The Super Z6 installs quickly and easily. View installation guide.

Be prepared for driving this winter with Super Z6 traction systems. A diagonal crossmember pattern provides better outstanding traction and durability than conventional chain systems.
Easy to Install
A split outside cable with two fastening positions allows for easy installation without moving the vehicle, so there's no need to stop and retighten. The traction coils are manufactured from alloy steel to increase the lifespan of the product. The Super Z6 is also designed to prevent scratching of alloy or high performance tire rims.
Versatility
The Super Z6 is available to fit passenger car, pickups, and SUV tire sizes. It offers a unique combination of performance and convenience features for every user, including a "designed-in" rubber tightener, better all-around traction performance than conventional tire chains or cables, and greater durability.
Designed for High Performance
The Super Z6 has better compatibility with anti-lock brakes, traction control, all-wheel drive, and other electronically monitored control systems so as not to interfere with the normal handling characteristics of your vehicle. The unique design also offers a low potential for damage to vehicle body and mechanical components, even when abused.
The Super Z6 SZ115 is designed for smaller tire sizes. Check the manufacturer's website for the exact product to fit your tire size. Also check your owner's manual for clearance specifications before installing winter traction products.
What's in the Box
Chains, plastic gloves, one pair of rubber tensioners, durable, re-usable nylon bag, and clear, illustrated step-by-step installation and removal instructions.

Security Chain Company QG2221CAM Quik Grip Light Truck Type CAM LSH Tire Traction Chain - Set of 2 Review

Security Chain Company QG2221CAM Quik Grip Light Truck Type CAM LSH Tire Traction Chain - Set of 2Great product at a great price. I used them extensively in northwest Texas over the X-mas holiday 2009. I drove my F-250 past twenty-two miles of traffic at a standstill on US 287 South between Electra and Jolle. Whst a difference the chains made. I spent X-mas eve night stuck behind semis in an ice blizzard. Awesome chains got me through. Most of those stranded spent another night on the road (or near it).

Thule 9mm CG9 Premium Passenger Car Snow Chain, Size 102 (Sold in pairs) Review

Thule 9mm CG9 Premium Passenger Car Snow Chain, Size 102I have used these chains for 2 seasons and have driven hundreds of miles on them. I love them and will never use another chain. They are quick and easy to attach. I am frequently in and out of the "chain-up area" before other drivers have even straightened out their chains. The low profile, 9mm chain links make for comfortable driving even at higher speeds.

I use them on a 2008 Subaru Impreza Outback. The owner's manual for this car says to never use chains or cables because they may interfere with the anti-lock brakes and steering mechanisms. This is apparently typical for smaller sports cars. But the state police won't always let me up the pass without chains installed, despite AWD and all-weather tires. I took the chains and the car to the Subaru dealership, had them put the car on a lift and install the chains. The dealership said they were fine and would not interfere with sensitive parts. I have been using these chains without issue, and after 2 seasons they show minimal wear. I fully expect to use them for 2 more seasons. I have not experienced the cable problem another reviewer had.

SUPER Z PASSENGER TIRE CHAINS Review

SUPER Z PASSENGER TIRE CHAINSI have used this twice. The first use was in Jan 2008. It was a very heavy snowstorm (dumped 5-7 ft of snow). I had one of the chain installers put on the chain on my van for a fee.(money well spent) I kept the chain on for 2 days and drove on both snow-covered and cleared road. I didn't have any problem at all. The second time was in Mar 2008, it was a light storm and again it was put on byan installer and I kept he chains on for a day. Again, no problem.

Security Chain Company QG1134 Quik Grip Type PL Class "S" Passenger Vehicle Tire Traction Chain - Set of 2 Review

Security Chain Company QG1134 Quik Grip Type PL Class 'S' Passenger Vehicle Tire Traction Chain - Set of 2Before buying I checked tire sizes, then went to the "fitment guide" to look up the correct size. When I tried to install the chains they did not fit! The closing lever/ hook barely reached the first link in the chain and no matter how and with what tools I tried I was unable to close it -- no twisted links or cross chains either, to account for the problem. I ended up taking some odd generic chain I had, cutting open a link and, after attaching it to the tire chain, welding it shut. With the added link the product works although it's still mighty snug. Granted, the tires are brand new and therefore a tad larger than the average for this size but the sizing chart should certainly allow for that. Good thing I can weld or we'd still be stuck up here in the Blue Ridge.

Thule 12mm XG12 Premium SUV/Cross Over Snow Chain, Size 240The fit of these was very tight. The tires needed to be warmed up first and even then, the plastic tabs that stop the chains from touching the tires come off very easy. These where very expensive compared to other chains.I don't think I would buy them again.I would go with cheap pair or pairs and still pay less than half of what I did for these.I will say that once on, they work well.

Thule K-Summit Low-Profile Passenger Car Snow Chain, Size K23 (Sold in pairs) Review

Thule K-Summit Low-Profile Passenger Car Snow Chain, Size K23My car has 255/35r19 rear tires so this seemed like the right (albeit EXPENSIVE) choice.Upon using for the first time last weekend a pin holding a chain link to a plate popped out thus rendering the chain useless. As a result we were stuck in the mountain for THREE HOURS waiting for a flatbed tow.As soon as I put the chains on (which BTW have terrible terse instructions), I wasn't beaming with confidence as the chains didn't seat at the center of the wide tires. The following might be a better alternative: Security Chain Super Z6, SZ143.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Thule K-Summit Low-Profile Passenger Car Snow Chain, Size K23 (Sold in pairs)

Product Description:
The K-Summit is the ultimate snow chain on the market today. The K-Summit is uniquely designed to ride on only the external surfaces of the tire so you don't need to worry about clearance issues on the inside of the tire or interference with ABS braking, suspension or steering components. The K-Summit is also one of the easiest chains to install in three easy steps. You simply lay the chain on the tire, attach it to one of the bolts, activate the ratchet and you're done. The chain automatically self-tightens and self-centers itself as you drive away. You don't need to keep other components mounted to the wheel over the winter like other chains. The K-Summit was produced in Italy and the craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident. It is made of special alloy plates and strengthening ribs along with zinc-plated pins and hard metal core rivets all designed for maximum grip, endurance, reliability and resistance to abrasion and laceration. The geometric design of the arms and the high toughness of the material won't allow the chain to come off the tire, even in extreme conditions. In addition the innovative ratchet system has a force multiplier of nine times so it allows effortless fitting and a safety lever to avoid accidental openings.

Thule XG12 Pro 267 Deluxe Snow Chain Model 267 Review

Thule XG12 Pro 267 Deluxe Snow Chain Model 267I almost didn't buy these chains because of the price, but I decided to drop the cash and give them a try. What a brilliant decision!

They install so easily and with the auto-tensioner, there's no more pulling some black circular rubber band thing and trying to hook it in 5 places along the chain. You hook the chains around the tire, slip the auto-tensioner piece through the hole until there is no slack and drive.

Taking off the chains is just as easy.

I feel sorry for the saps on the side of the road struggling with their chains, then end up paying some chain installer to help them out.

Security Chain Company QG0219 Quik Grip Garden Tractor and Snow Blower Tire Traction Chain - Set of 2 Review

Security Chain Company QG0219 Quik Grip Garden Tractor and Snow Blower Tire Traction Chain - Set of 2The product would be great except for one thing; the picture shows the portions of the chain that go over the tread all evenly spaced and at regular intervals. But that's not the case where the links connect when installing the chains. It's like there's one missing there.I ended buying a bit more chain locally and adding it to the assembly. In my view, it should have been there from the start.

Thule 12mm CB12 High Quality Passenger Car Snow Chain, Size 090 (Sold in pairs) Review

Thule 12mm CB12 High Quality Passenger Car Snow Chain, Size 090I don't have any complaints about these chains, and I am one to easily complaint about product flaws.Very easy to install, although the first part of the rachet-system takes a second to comprehend. They seem to fit my tires very very well (185/65-14), snugger than other chains I've tried. These are super compact--about the size of three dinner plantes stacked together. Italian made, so Chinese-made product quality isn't an issue. These also meet "S" low-profile standards; I have a 2000 Honda Civic EX. Very happy.

Security Chain Company Z-579 Z-Chain Extreme Performance Cable Tire Traction Chain - Set of 2 Review

Security Chain Company Z-579 Z-Chain Extreme Performance Cable Tire Traction Chain - Set of 2I've been using the Z-chains since they were introduced, which seems like at least 15 years. Used them on two Audis (90 and A4), an Acura TSX and most recently a 2007 Toyota Prius.

I find these useful for the purpose they are designed for: as a temporary traction device designed to be used for short periods and at low speeds to get you through a rough section and then to be removed. Driving with them for long stretches is not a good idea, nor is fast driving, driving on pavement, etc.

They are pretty ideal for California mountains where the frequent requirement for chains has a lot to do with the cluelessness of the local drivers about operating in snow and the complete lack of regular safety inspections for vehicles (meaning that among other things, completely bald tires are quite common). These chains offer just what most local drivers need to feel reasonably confident and to avoid accidents. Carrying them will satisfy the CHP if they stop you to check. I grew up on an infrequently-plowed icy hilltop in Connecticut and have rarely found a real need for them at this end of the country, but have used them 1-3 times a year pretty consistently, either because the officer insisted or because in my opinion the roads were icy enough to justify an additional traction device. In those circumstances, they've done the trick but I would have preferred studded snow tires.

When using any chains, basic rules need to be followed: speed under 30mph, and pretty much do everything in slow motion. Accellerate, brake, turn and do everything else slowly and gradually or you will risk chain breakage. If you go with this "slow motion" approach, these things significantly increase traction on slick snow and icy surfaces, moderately improve it on soft snow surfaces and should not make things that much worse on sections where you are on pavement. They will, however, make things a lot noisier.

The primary benefits of these chains when compared to many other designs are twofold: the diagonal crossmembers tend not to be an issue for ABS systems and are somewhat quieter than other designs, and the installation is somewhat simpler than designs that use rubber tensioners.

The downsides are that these generate less traction than heavier chains; the installation, while simpler, is more prone to failure and requires at least one retensioning (I have always made a point to stop and retension twice); the force required to properly tension them can be difficult to muster with your bare hands in the cold; and finally, the clearance they require is less than offered by many recent vehicles. This last issue can be a major problem for many of today's cars. They require at least 15mm (about 5/8") on all sides of the tire and that's assuming you've got them on perfectly and as tight as possible. Many of today's vehicles just don't offer that much space. I would be especially careful using these with any vehicles that are delivered with "sport suspension" or similar packages. See my note about the Super Z6 chain below and check your owners manual! Some vehicles simply don't have space for any chains, cables or other traction devices and need to be left home in the snow.

I would not recommend these as a solution if you live and drive full-time in snow country. You're just going to beat up your hands during the frequent installations, beat up your tires during use, and possibly beat up the wheels and wheel wells as well. The right solution to that problem is dedicated winter tires, 4WD or a combination of the two.

A final note: For my most recent vehicle I've switched to the Super-Z6 model, also by SCC. That model uses a rubber tensioner to hold the chains on, which adds an extra step to the installation procedure but in my experience makes it easier and avoids the need for retensioning. A key benefit of that model is that it requires only 6mm (1/4") of clearance around the tire to be used safely, which is more and more important on modern, tight-clearance vehicles.

The split design that allows you to install them without driving onto them is perfect. Removal only takes about 1-2 min/per wheel. I ended up having to drive on them for 3 miles on bare roads without any problems or signs of wear. I also was able to plow through 2 feet of packed snow in a Honda minivan. Update- for rims that bulge out in the middle, the tighteners may rub on it leaving a mark. It just depends on your wheel style.

Product Description:
The SCC Super Z6 SZ143 winter traction product offers superior performance for cars, pickups, and SUVs with very limited operating clearance around the drive tires.

Versatility
The Super Z6 is available to fit passenger cars, pickups, and SUV tire sizes.
The Super Z6 SZ143 is designed for tires sized from approximately 215 to 285 millimeters.

Security Chain Company SZ329 Shur Grip Z Passenger Car Tire Traction Chain - Set of 2 Review

Security Chain Company SZ329 Shur Grip Z Passenger Car Tire Traction Chain - Set of 2There are a confusing array of tire chains/traction control devices on the market, and even this particular company makes so many different models that it's hard to tell which ones are the best. Here's what you need to know about chains and traction control devices, and why I like the ones made by SCC. I also include some installation hints at the bottom of this review.

There are two broad types of traction control devices: Tire chains and traction control cables. Tire chains are actual chain links. Traction control cables are long pieces of metal cables, covered in a plastic coating, and designed to form a Z-pattern over your tires. The plastic coating is then surrounded by hundreds of tiny, round, metal springs. Cables are generally regarded as better because they are easier to install, last longer, are less damaging to roads, and work better with vehicles equipped with ABS. Also, according to SCC, you can safely drive with cable devices up to 30 mph, even on roads with no snow, without damaging them.

You should normally install traction control cables on your drive wheels, i.e. the wheels that actually push or pull your car forward. If the snow is really bad, though, you may have to install cables on all four wheels. Read your vehicle's owner's manual for more details on where to install your cables.

In any case, it's a really, really good idea to have TWO sets of cables in your car at all times. That way, if something breaks (murphy's law), you won't be stuck.

Within the traction control cable category, there are two general types of cables: Self-tensioning cables tighten themselves using a tensioner (which looks, feels, and operates like a rubber band) that you install when you put the cables on. Manual tensioning cables are tightened by you, and have to be re-tightened after you drive for a couple hundred feet or so. I've heard that emergency vehicles tend to use the manually adjustable models because they are allegedly safer at speeds above 30 MPH, but driving above 30 MPH for any non-emergency personnel is illegal with any kind of traction control device.

There are several advantages to the manually adjustable models. They tend to have more slack, which can make installation easier. Also, the tensioners (i.e. rubber bands) on self-adjusting cables can and do break (it happened to me today) and if they break, you can't use the cables. So, if you get a cable that has a tensioner, get extra tensioners, or better yet, an extra set of cables, just in case.

Here's a breakdown of SCC's cable products:

Z-Chain- Manually adjustable Traction Control Cable. Easy to install, but must be retightened shortly after you start driving. Very easy to install because they come with lots of slack. Often used by police and fire personnel.

Shur Grip Z/Super Z LT- These are essentially the same, but the Shur Grip's are sized for passenger cars and the Super Z LT's are sized for light trucks.Self adjusting cable. Tensioners can break so buy extras. Less slack, so can be harder to put on the car, but generally easier than Z-chains because you don't have to manually tighten and re-tighten them.

Super Z6/Z8- Newest Self adjusting cable, designed for vehicles with very little sidewall clearance. They have all the advantages and disadvantages of the Shur Grip Z. In addition, however, the connectors are a little harder to work with on this model because of their low profile.

On all of these models, the metal rings are made of a spring-like material, SCC says that you don't have to remove the chains as soon as you reach a paved road. Rather, as long as you drive under 30 MPH, SCC says that you can drive with the traction control cables on your car, even as you switch between plowed and non-plowed roads. Because each of the hundreds of little springs are separate pieces, even when one breaks, it just falls off, and the others work to fill-in the void.

The Z6/Z8 models also come with a very nice cloth bag that is sized properly to hold the cables. The older cable-based SCC models come with plastic containers that are too small to easily lay the cables in.

Installing the cables is relatively easy, and I'm definitely not a hands-on kind of guy. It took me about 15 minutes the very first time, and now that I've done it several times, I can get it done in under a minute per wheel. SCC has a video on their web-site that explains how to do it. You should always do a test-installation of cables before you need them to make sure that you purchased the correct size and know how to install it. It's also very useful to have some waterproof gloves handy and a towel with you, as it is often wet and cold when you need to install chains. A good choice for gloves are the long wristed rubber gloves that you can buy at the grocery store for washing dishes, or some disposal latex gloves. After you use the cables for the first time, fold each cable separately and then use a trash bag tie to keep each one together. Otherwise, the next time you need them, they'll all be tangled together.

Here are some hints on how to install these chains.

1. Read the instructions from the manufacturer and pay close attention to the safety instructions. The basics of the instructions are (1) stay safe, (2) position the cables correctly, (3) connect the upper rear connector, (4) connect the upper front connector, (5) connect the lower front connector, and (6) connect the black rubber bands.

The instructions are quite good, but they leave out a few helpful hints, which I will now share with you.

BEFORE YOU START, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT SIDE UP! There are markings all over the cables which indicate the correct orientation. Look for them!

2. Put on some rubber dishwashing gloves and lay a towel down wherever you're going to work, or you will get very, very dirty.

3. When you slide the cables under your tires, start from a point between your front and rear tires. Slide half of the chain under your car, and then reach around from the other side of the tire to pull the cable around. Although the instructions describe a swinging slide motion, I've never seen anyone who could do that without twisting the cables up. Just pull them and things will be much easier.

4. Once the cables are around the tire, DO NOT pull the bottom connectors that hold the cables together at the bottom of the tire towards one another. Keep them as far apart as possible. If you pull them in tight, you won't be able to pull the chain high enough in the back to connect the rear upper connector, which is what you are supposed to do first.

5. When you are connecting the rear upper connector, if you can't get the rear upper connectors up above the tire so that you can see them, push the part of the cables that surround the bottom of your tire backwards and under your car a few inches. This will create slack behind the cables and allow you to pull the cables up in the back.

6. Once you have the rear upper connector connected, hooking up the front upper connector may be difficult. Try pushing the rear upper connector back so that it is laying against the inside sidewall of your tire and then pull the front upper connectors towards you as hard as you can. Don't try to pull them towards each other. While sitting, just pull them straight out, towards you, and the rest of the chains should fall into place. Then they should be easy to connect.

7. Gently pull the parts of the chain that criss-cross your tires down towards the ground so that they aren't all bunched up at the top. Look at the chain and make sure that the parts you can see, and especially the blue cable, is evenly distributed around the tire.

8. Then pull the bottom front connectors towards you (out, but not up or down) to create slack. Then connect them. Again, don't try to pull them towards one another as that makes it almost impossible to create slack.
