I bought this tire gauge specifically to check the tire pressure of my F350 dually.The factory installed steel extenders made using pencil type gauges or other digital gauges impractical, particularly for checking the inner and outer rear tires.Even though this gauge is sold for 'dual rear wheel trucks', I had to bend the steel tube about 5 degrees so it could make solid contact with the inner tire inflation stem.Once it was bent, the gauge worked perfectly!NOTE: I had friends at a machine shop bend the steel tube for me, it was too stiff to bend by hand or in a vice.The gauge has big digits that are easy to read, even without my cheater glasses.The air release button on the handle is convienent to use - even though I first thought it was for the display.I have found it best to test the pressure, add more air than needed and then slowly release it using a combination of the button and disengaging and reengaging the gauge and testing until you get the desired tire pressure.I found that if I failed to disengage and then reengage the tire pressure gauge, it tended to give me the same reading without resetting.The guys at the garages always 'OHHHH and AHHHH' when I open the case and pull out this impressive tool.It was well worth the money and Amazon had the best price of the various sites I visited while price shopping.Oh, yea, I had to cut the plastic case a tad to allow for the bent tube to properly fit in the case so it would close.

Slime 2020-A Dually RV Gauge (10-160 PSI) Review

The bleed button on this gauge is quite useful. I can slowly released air from the tires by holding down the bleed button while the tire pressure is being measured. I find it easier to overinflate the tire just slightly, by a pound or so, and release the excess using the bleed valve to obtain the wanted pressure. The dial on the gauge also retains the tire pressure reading after measuring, the hose is ~5" long and quite flexible to fit in some hard to reach spots.

Milton S506 Dual Head Inflator Gauge with 12" Air Hose Review

Alas, I must disagree with everybody else about this inflator.Yes, it is quite sturdy.But any individual who purchases this heavy-duty item is probably a little bit fanatic about their vehicle(s) -- so you must hear of its 3 basic flaws: (1) This particular model (the 506) *does not* have the deflation action built into the spring-loaded inflator lever.(You deflate similarly as on any other inflator, by pulling the chuck slightly off the valve stem.)(2) The accuracy is not great in general: The window doesn't really line up perfectly over the gauge line, and a 2PSI resolution with close-together markings (to allow for up to 120PSI) is much harder to read than a 0-60PSI Accu-Gage with wider spaced 1-PSI marks (or an Accutire with the electronic strain .5-PSI increments).Worse, my specific Milton unit always reads low by ~2 PSI!(3) The long-handle chuck flops around unless you always keep one hand on it, and the other hand on the inflator lever/gauge.(The photo shows the hose folded, packing-taped together.)And definitely don't let go of the lever/gauge because it will swing about on its long tail (remember you're dragging around an entire hose with it).I didn't actually nick my car while dragging the hose, but had one close call in my garage.

This unit is fine for non-precision work, and absolutely the best for high-volume work (or "unattended locations") -- where you can't trust that a separate gauge won't be mislaid.(E.g. a contractor's garage for their fleet of vans or similar.)But for home use, I prefer my cheapo ball chuck and my higher-accuracy gauge.I can manipulate them more easily, and switching chuck and gauge is no less annoying than lifting and re-seating the Milton chuck.(If you do go my route, you have to decide if you want the convenience of final adjustment by deflating with a button on the gauge (AccuGage) or the extra precision but no deflator (AccuTire).)Truly, I *wanted* to like the Milton 506 -- and to be uber-cool with a professional inflator and retracting hose reel in my home garage!But it was just... sub-optimal.

Security Chain Company Z-579 Z-Chain Extreme Performance Cable Tire Traction Chain - Set of 2 Review

I've been using the Z-chains since they were introduced, which seems like at least 15 years. Used them on two Audis (90 and A4), an Acura TSX and most recently a 2007 Toyota Prius.

I find these useful for the purpose they are designed for: as a temporary traction device designed to be used for short periods and at low speeds to get you through a rough section and then to be removed. Driving with them for long stretches is not a good idea, nor is fast driving, driving on pavement, etc.

They are pretty ideal for California mountains where the frequent requirement for chains has a lot to do with the cluelessness of the local drivers about operating in snow and the complete lack of regular safety inspections for vehicles (meaning that among other things, completely bald tires are quite common). These chains offer just what most local drivers need to feel reasonably confident and to avoid accidents. Carrying them will satisfy the CHP if they stop you to check. I grew up on an infrequently-plowed icy hilltop in Connecticut and have rarely found a real need for them at this end of the country, but have used them 1-3 times a year pretty consistently, either because the officer insisted or because in my opinion the roads were icy enough to justify an additional traction device. In those circumstances, they've done the trick but I would have preferred studded snow tires.

When using any chains, basic rules need to be followed: speed under 30mph, and pretty much do everything in slow motion. Accellerate, brake, turn and do everything else slowly and gradually or you will risk chain breakage. If you go with this "slow motion" approach, these things significantly increase traction on slick snow and icy surfaces, moderately improve it on soft snow surfaces and should not make things that much worse on sections where you are on pavement. They will, however, make things a lot noisier.

The primary benefits of these chains when compared to many other designs are twofold: the diagonal crossmembers tend not to be an issue for ABS systems and are somewhat quieter than other designs, and the installation is somewhat simpler than designs that use rubber tensioners.

The downsides are that these generate less traction than heavier chains; the installation, while simpler, is more prone to failure and requires at least one retensioning (I have always made a point to stop and retension twice); the force required to properly tension them can be difficult to muster with your bare hands in the cold; and finally, the clearance they require is less than offered by many recent vehicles.This last issue can be a major problem for many of today's cars. They require at least 15mm (about 5/8") on all sides of the tire and that's assuming you've got them on perfectly and as tight as possible. Many of today's vehicles just don't offer that much space. I would be especially careful using these with any vehicles that are delivered with "sport suspension" or similar packages. See my note about the Super Z6 chain below and check your owners manual! Some vehicles simply don't have space for any chains, cables or other traction devices and need to be left home in the snow.

I would not recommend these as a solution if you live and drive full-time in snow country. You're just going to beat up your hands during the frequent installations, beat up your tires during use, and possibly beat up the wheels and wheel wells as well. The right solution to that problem is dedicated winter tires, 4WD or a combination of the two.

A final note: For my most recent vehicle I've switched to the Super-Z6 model, also by SCC. That model uses a rubber tensioner to hold the chains on, which adds an extra step to the installation procedure but in my experience makes it easier and avoids the need for retensioning. A key benefit of that model is that it requires only 6mm (1/4") of clearance around the tire to be used safely, which is more and more important on modern, tight-clearance vehicles.

Slime 10009 Tubeless Tire Sealant - 32 oz. Review

It was getting to the point that I was filling my tires 2 to 3 times a week. I took the worst of the tires and soaped it up. The leaking was coming from around the bang-on rim weight. I called up my local tire repair shop and they wanted $25+ to dismount, clean and remount the tire to fix the rim-leak. Since all four tires were leaking, it would cost me over $100 (with tax, etc.) to have all tires done. Then, I remembered Slime, and asked a guy at the auto parts store if it worked. He said that his tires were leaking like a sieve all around the side-walls, which Slime fixed. IMPORTANT: He said NOT to follow the instructions on the bottle and, instead, put in 8oz per tire for 24 in. tires. That is roughly 60% more than recommended according to the instructions on the bottle.

I was able to buy a 32oz bottle for around $9.00 where I live. When I got home, I got a ruler, placed the bottle upright on a flat surface and measured the amount of liquid in the bottle. I made 4 marks on the side of the bottle with an indelible marker -- dividing the contents into 4 parts (if the label goes all the way around the bottle with no gap, you will have to peel some of the label off so you can mark the bottle directly and see the remaining level of fluid inside as you squeeze the contents into each tire). I then took out my hydraulic jack; jacked up one side of the car in order to relieve the weight on the tires when deflated, then removed the valve from the stems in the two tires on that side. After all air was out of the tires, I squeezed in 1/4 (8oz) of the bottle into each tire, screwed the valve back into the stems, re-inflated the tires and dropped the car back onto the garage floor. I repeated this procedure with the other side of the car. All-in-all, it didn't take me more than 30 minutes to deflate all four tires, squeeze the slime in and re-fill them with air.

I then took the car out for a drive -- to work the Slime into all the crevices of the tire and rim. There was an immediate difference; and, within a few days of driving (because it takes time to work the slime into all the nooks and crannies) there were no more severe leaks. It was the first time I was able to go for more than a week without having to fill my tires. After 3-4 weeks, the tires are holding air and I don't even have to top them off anymore.

Interestingly, just last week before Christmas, I noticed that one of the tires on my wife's car was flat. Luckily, I noticed it while it was still sitting in the garage. I filled it up with air, and it was flat the next morning. I filled it up again, and it was flat that evening (it was getting worse real fast). I took the tire off and soaped it up like I did on my car. Wow! There were leaks all around both the inside and outside rim (must be all the salt and below-zero weather). So, like I did to my car, I slimed it and filled it up with air. I drove it around for about 10 minutes and parked it. A few days later, it still read the same pressure as I put in it a few days earlier after I slimed it. A few days later, I did the other three tires.

As I figure it, I saved over $200 in rim-cleaning & remounting costs for 8-tires with two $9.00 32oz bottles of Slime.

Also, be aware, that since there is so much slime in the tires (way more than the directions say to use, as explained above following the instructions from the auto-parts guy), at speeds over 35-40 mph, the tires will be a bit unbalanced for about a mile until the slime evens out from centrifugal force -- something that I have no problem living with, since it saved me over $200. After about a mile, everything smoothes out and the wheels automatically fall back into balance (kind of like those centrifugal balancing weights used on 18-wheelers). I have driven at speeds up to 65 mph for long durations with no noticeable shimmy or bounce after the slime re-balances itself inside the tires.

I ordered two sets of the Motion Pro Spoon-Type Tire Irons (4 tire spoons total) to change my own ATV tires.Before ordering I was concerned that they may be too small and not provide enough leverage.Not to worry, they are the perfect length, any longer and they would not work well with smaller tires such as what is on a Yamaha Blaster.The rounded spoon does not dig into the rims or tire.The handle portion is very comfortable and the metal is strong, they do not flex or bend.The only problem associated with them is they should be sold in packs of three.You could mount the tires with two, but you would have to put more pressure on the rubber than using three.The fourth spoon was not used during the mounting process so I guess I have a spare. Tire Garage Review

I bought this item wanting to store my studded tires while not in use. At the time I bought it, it was advertised as "Universal Fit". My tires did not fit. This is for only 27" tires or smaller. Otherwise it seems to be a nice product. It has a thick heavy duty base and the canvas seems to be heavy enough for storage purposes. I'm hoping to find it in a larger size, but so far no luck. I docked it one star just because it dosen't fit ALL tires.

My first time using these was great. Record snow storm in So Cal mountains required cables and i never lost traction and only took about 3 minutes each wheel to install. Once your experienced- allow 2 min/per wheel. The split design that allows you to install them without driving onto them is perfect. Removal only takes about 1-2 min/per wheel. I ended up having to drive on them for 3 miles on bare roads without any problems or signs of wear. I also was able to plow through 2 feet of packed snow in a Honda minivan. Update- for rims that bulge out in the middle, the tighteners may rub on it leaving a mark. It just depends on your wheel style.

Q Industries HV40A2 SuperFlow Portable Air Compressor with LED Light Review

Ok.. I didn't get this from Amazon. I got it from Steve's Tools for about 5$ more.
Needed it now because my old crappy $15 pump finally died.

Pros.
Real smooth and well balanced.This thing doesn't jump around at all.
Fill speed is good, but not for large tires.
For those get the version that clamps to battery terminals.

This one topped off my P255-75R15 in decent time.
However, filling up my 60PSI doughnut spare took a while.
I don't think there is much head space for the higher pressures.
This is where the screw-on air chuck was useful.

The pressure gauge actually works and is accurate.
The switches are separate for pump and LED lights.

The handle is actually a metal heat shield for the output.
Run this pump for a while airing up a 60 PSI spare and you
will understand why it needs a heat shield.

The unit comes with a bag.Not the highest quality but
sufficient for storing the pump and a few other odds and ends.

Cons.
The screw-on air chuck can be a pain, but just overfill a bit before taking it off.
The air hose is adequate for reaching front and back tires on one side,
but you have to move the pump from one side of the vehicle to the other.
The LED lamps aren't that bright, and the blinkers are only three white LEDs.
You have to put in a red filter.They should have been red LEDs.

I'm reserving comment on the lighter connector.Looks a bit cheap compared to the
rest of this unit.

All in all I'm happy.

Mothers Wheel & Wheel Well Long Handled Brush Review

Interdynamics TX-120 TyphoonMax 120-Volt Heavy Duty Air Compressor Review

This was purchased to replace the lighter socket compressor I had for years that was really not very useful to inflate bicycle tires and inflatable toys and balls for my kids.Every time I worried about running down my car battery if the car was not running just to inflate to avoid hand pumps.

Thus, I searched for a compressor I could plug into an electrical socket. This product got good reviews and finding Amazon had the best price I purchased it, but I note that they lowered the price and no longer have the price guarantee offered in the past.

I did compare this compressor with one sold by Sears that is also branded under other names and that compressor did not get good reviews.

Nevertheless, after having this compressor for several months and putting it to use, so far it has not failed and operates nicely. The gauge is fairly accurate as I used it to fill our bicycle tires and then measured the pressure with a gauge.

While some reviewers complained these type compressors are noisy, not even the lighter socket one I have, that this one replaces, is quiet.Any type of compressor, whether it is for airbrushing or power tools is not quiet.

This is a useful tool and useful to have.

Quik-Stik Tire Changer (colors may vary) Review

I don't like other bicycle tire irons compared to this one.

They're too short.They break.

This one makes it easy to install a brand new tire that needs some brute force to stretch it on to the rim.

It's also devoid of any pointed edge so I don't worry about it pinching or puncturing my inner tube.

I also think it's kinder to my rims.

Yeah, it doesn't have the spoke holder that other irons have, but you quickly learn with this tool, they're unnecessary.

This is one of the inexpensive MSI "Accutire" strain-gauge pencil gauges (perhaps an MS-4820B, cut in half?), wrapped up in a cute little Mr. Bibendum shroud.("Mr. Bibendum" is the actual name of the Michelin Man.)In this case, "inexpensive" isn't pejorative: this gauge functions just fine, and (at least while new) seats on the valve without leaking -- which is the biggest failing of cheap gauges.(Note the MS Accutire gauges get mixed reviews on this score, so these Michelin versions may vary too.)It's both: (a) cute enough, and (b) small enough, to live in your Mazda Miata's glove box!

Accutire MS-4751WC Digital Programmable Tire Gauge with Light Review

I assume that Amazon will directly be selling this product at some point in the future (1/2008 right now), so I wanted to take the time to review this product.

I purchased this product from Costco for Christmas (well, the wife did for me) ... price was about $15.The model number was MS-4751WC.I can't see a difference betweeen mine and the MS-4751B advertised here.

Correcting some specs that are in the description ... Range is 5-99 PSI, Accuracy is +/- 1% + 0.1 PSI.Resolution is .1 PSI.The unit uses two replaceable batteries (CR2032).The unit is extremely well built ... with a heavy solid feeling that probably comes from its 1/2 pound weight! The unit is 5-1/4" Long by 2-1/2" Wide by 1-1/4" Thick.There is a bright white LED light in the tip of the unit that works well.Strange is that neither the users guide nor the unit itself tells you the model number ... it is only on the cardboard in the blister pack.Perhaps it is under the battery compartment that is held on by a philips screw.The actual display is 1-1/2 in diameter.The unit comes with a nice zippered storage case.

The unit allows you to program in front and rear tire pressures, and then will indicate if your pressure is either high or low.It looks more like a marketing gimmick, but I did program the front tires for one car, and the rear for my other car so I don't forget the inflation pressures that I use.

The unit needs to be held onto the valve stem for 2-3 seconds before the unit beeps to tell you that the pressure is recorded.It stays on the screen for 10 seconds and displays with a nice blue LCD backlight display.Unlike other Accutire gauges, this one makes a great seal between the gauge and the valve stem with absolutely no hissing or loss of air.This was on different types of tire valve stems.

Overall I like the unit, although it's a tad on the large size.It fits my hand well and the outside has a nice rubber cushion to allow you to have a good grip.A definite 5 star rating in my book.

WIRELESS TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR Review

Hello All,

I've had this Motorcycle Tire Pressure Monitoring System for about 6 months now... So I feel I can now review them.

Fitment:
Well, it couldn't be easier to fit these. You simply remove your valve stem caps, and substitute these. They take little "pill" or "button" batteries that slip easily into place. Then you simply install the AAA battery in the receiver unit, turn it on, and follow the easy instructions to program your high and low pressure warnings and temperatures.

Functionality:
The units react very quickly, and you can test this by just twisting the caps open a little to let the pressure between the cap and the valve get out... The cap will immediately send the low pressure signal to the "key fob" display, which will beep its alert and vibrate. Provided that the batteries in all the units are good.

Pros:
Easy to fit, pretty easy to program, external to tire (so no need to dismount you wheel, then the tire, then fit those internal units, then mount it all back up again; knowing that you will have to do it all over again when the sending unit batteries go flat!). The units are pretty accurate. In my experience within 0.5-1.0 psi of the actual pressure (checked against several very accurate gauges). This system is quite a bit less expensive than the other "internal" units, especially when you consider the labor to fit them if you are not doing the install yourself. And it is way cool to be able to check your pressures at the touch of a button. Also, if you attach the unit to the bars or dash (or close to body so you can feel the vibration while you are riding), it could save you some real problems by alerting you to a low pressure situation BEFORE you actually have a totally flat tire. Which could mean that you pull off the freeway earlier, into a Truck Stop, where there are facilities to repair your tire. Which is way better than sitting at the side of the highway, trucks and cars whizzing by, trying to lift the front end of you bike in the air to change the front tire!!!

Cons:
AND PAY ATTENTION HERE!!! These units are no substitute for checking your tire pressures with an accurate gauge!!! They can sometimes show the last pressure registered, and if you don't pay attention to the TINY "link" icon, you might think all is OK, when it isn't!!! Also, you need to pay VERY close attention to the "power" icon. As if you get low power in the monitor, or the sending units, the icon will illuminate, BUT again, it still showed the previous reading. The monitor is a "Key Fob" style, with no facility to mount it on the dash or bars. This means that in all likelyhood, the unit will sit in a jacket pocket (like mine did), where you can't effectively feel the vibration (or mistake it for your phone) while riding with all the wind buffeting and noise. A big imporvement to the unit would be to supply it with some form of mount... Or even Velcro... And a way to easily remove the chain that attaches to your keys...

BUT BIGGEST ISSUE HERE IS NOT ERRANT READINGS... IT IS SAFETY!!!
It is my opinion (after actually experiencing this first hand), that these units should NEVER be installed on bikes which have rubber valve stems! They should ONLY BE INSTALLED ON MOTORCYCLES THAT HAVE METAL VALVE STEMS, PERIOD! Over time, cruising on the freeway at higher speeds, cross country where one might run higher than the posted limit, the constant pressure of the weight of the valve caps under centrifugal force of the wheel rotating at high speed, WILL BEND THE RUBBER VALVE STEM OVER TO THE RIM!!! Do this time after time (speeding up and slowing down again as you do on the freeway) and eventually it CAUSES THE VALVE STEM TO TEAR, causing it to lose air. If you are lucky like I was, you are ONLY left at the side of the road with a flat FRONT tire, a broken valve stem, in the middle of nowhere on a Sunday!!!!!!!! That's if you are LUCKY! If you are not... The consequences of a high speed rapid deflation of the front tire (as mine was) could be catastrophic!!!

Conclusion:
A great little system IF...

1. You make sure your batteries are always in a good condition, and you program it correctly.
2. You really PAY ATTENTION to the TINY icons in the corners of the screen of the TPMS monitor.
3. YOU NEVER FIT THESE TO RUBBER VALVE STEMS (I'm pretty sure they are fine on metal ones, especially the steel kind with "O-Rings").
4. You keep the monitor where it can be seen, or felt easily while riding the bike... Otherwise you lose the warning aspect of the unit.

Things to think about...
It's a pretty expensive way to check your tire pressures... Especially when an inexpensive (less than $5) gauge will do the same thing... And that when you check you tire pressures manually, you are also way closer to your tires, which allows you to assess their condition, and maybe note uneven wear, or a cut, or a nail... Whatever. Bottom line is you may see something you would have otherwise seen by checking manually (just as you do when cleaning you bike frequently).

Forever Black Tire Gel Kit Review

I began using the Forever Black Tire Gel Kit right after I got my Goodyear Eagle GT's on my 2005 Ford Thunderbird. I like to customize my vehicles so I sent my new tires sent to Diamondback Classics Tires in Conway, South Carolina. Upon their arrival there, Diamondback "sanded" micron by micron almost all of the lettering and lines from the sidewalls to give them what is called a "Smoothie" appearance, and giving the tires an old bias-ply, super smooth appearance. Well,they looked completely awesome upon installation, but they were dust "magnets".

So I ordered the Forever Black Tire Gel Kit and what a difference it made. The Smoothies look like they are nearly always shiney. And they look very, very jet black. If you are a detail-oriented individual, someone who loves to make their car look their best at all times, Forever Black Tire Gel Kit is an inexpensive "freshen-up" for those tires. You may want to do two or three full applications your first time out of the box to get the best, deepest black, and then just maintain your vehicle as usual. I apply it now about once every 6 to 8 weeks (depending on how much I drive)for a lasting effect.

It's easy too. Just FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS and apply it SLOWLY for the first couple of rounds or until you get the feel of it and are comfortable with applying it. You may want to have a couple things with you before you start: small stool to sit on, microfiber cloths, small foam brush for around wheel, it is sort of hard to get off your wheels. IN THE EVENT YOU GET THE GEL ON YOUR WHEELS, you can easily wipe it off while wet, but if you missed a spot and it got on your rims and dried, go to a car wash with a pre-soak and high-powered wand, it will come right off. It is a type of dye so you do want to be careful, and make sure you understand the directions.

You won't be disappointed. I hope you have fun with it, I know I have!
