DUNLOP D606 90/90-21 FRONT TIRE #32SF21 32SF21 Review

It's official, thumpers. You can count me among the legions of fans of the Dunlop D606. A 60/40 on/off kind of guy, I'm a week into a new pair and more impressed by the muddy mile. From the start, I was thrilled at how well these suckers do on pavement. Leaning into a turn is no problem -in fact you can still have a blast on those twisty roads to nowhere. Speed does not bring about any unexpected behavior at all. The howl of the knobs is there but it's not nearly as dramatic as some sensitive types have made it out to be. It's sort of a low moan, like a kid trying to mimic the sound of a cartoon ghost. I got used to it within days and barely notice it anymore. When I do notice, I consider it my Suzuki DR650 expressing glee over the landscape upon which we're riding: "Oooooooooh..."
Off road, the 606 is absolutely confidence inspiring, especially in mucky stuff. The Dunlops are not afraid of mud, I like to say. Mud is afraid of the Dunlops. These things will climb a hill no matter how many rocks, roots or stumps try to keep you down. They're absolutely phenomenal going through long, lake-esque puddles and washouts. I was so used to slipping and bogging down with the stock Trailwings, these Dunlops make it feel like flying.
I believe it's true that there is a certain break-in period with these. Some have suggested the 606's get really hooked up after 500 miles. For me, it was more like 100-200 miles when I began to lose the white knuckles and gain the kind of confidence that would make Smiling Bob happy.
When I first got the tires, they were inflated to 20 psi both front and back. I since lowered that to 18 on both ends and find it a nice spot to handle road and off road without having to monkey with pressure every time you go from one or the other. I've heard of some folks going as low as 12 lbs and as high as 30. With my 175 lb. physique, 18 works really well.
I got the wider tire for the rear and it seems to take a real toll on pavement braking. I can't say for certain that it has anything to do with the Dunlops, but I really have to stomp on the rear brake while the front brake is super sensitive. No negative effects on riding, just something to get used to.
Absolutely great tires that won't feel like a compromise if you mix up street and off road. I researched the hell of tires for my ride and now see why so many people rave about the Dunlop 606.

Firefly Low Tire Flasher 10-pack Programmable Pressure Review

I'm a sucker for anything that lets me avoid the hassle of checking tire pressure.So I've considered an aftermarket tire pressure system (but not for long, once I realized how complex the installation is) and I've bought the cheaper screw-on caps that show green or red through a little window, and been very dissatisfied.Among other things, they tell you (only after you've bought them) not to get them wet.That's hard to do in heavy rain or a car wash.

These Firefly flasher caps are ruggedly built (metal!) and easy to install.My only gripe was that they didn't work.

So I called the 800 number for the merchant who said, "Oh yeah, when we got the first batch in we thought they were all defective, but then we found out you have to screw them on all the way and that's why they included that little wrench."

Why the instructions don't mention that, and why they don't tell you what that little tool is (it's a wrench, ok, but not like one you've seen before) is beyond me.But not to quibble.

They seem like a good product, they test ok (unscrew a few turns and they blink brightly) and maybe they'll actually work over the long haul.If so, I think I like them.

I'll know a lot more in 6 months.

Fix-A-Flat - Super Tire Inflator, 20 oz., Case of 6 (S430-C) Review

SEVERAL MONTHS AGO I REALLY NEEDED THIS STUFF RATHER DESPERATELY ------ AND IT WORKED, BUT - - -

I did not really have quite enough product in the 16 oz. can that I got at Wal-Mart [this is the 20 oz. can offered here] to refill my leaking tire --that I had to do at the gas station some 6 miles away. In essence, the operation was a success, but I had to resuscitate the patient again at the gas station some 6 miles and a number of grey hairs down the road. If the can was only a tad bigger, it would have added enough air to go safely, rather than unsafely with about 2 psi of air pressure, to the gas station where we completely filled the tire with air. By the way, my tire size was 225/70-14, which requires a pretty large volume of air to fill, but no more than most vans and trucks and less than some. This 16 oz. can would have probably been enough for a small 13" tire, but I should warn you - that the same thing happened 6 years ago, on a 195/70-14 that was an oversized tire on my sons 1999 Toyota Corrolla, but I would be getting ahead of myself.

HERE'S OUR STORY -- IT REALLY HAPPENED LAST FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 22nd in Southern Indiana
IN A NUTSHELL: GREAT PRODUCT - BUT THE 20 OZ. CAN IS PROBABLY THE SMALLEST YOU'LL NEED UNLESS YOU HAVE 13" TIRES HERE'S THE TALE --

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN IT'S RAINING & YOUR TIRE GOES FLAT IN WAL-MART'S PARKING LOT?

This happened to me today and I was scared out of my wits. I had an hour to get home before my six-year-old son got off the school bus. I was 25 miles away and I just saw my rear tire and knew it had no air in it. I recalled using this product about 6 years ago and that it worked, so I ran into Wal-Mart and skipped the items I had come shopping for and went straight to the automotive section to hunt for this stuff. Twenty minutes later, standing in the parking lot, I read the directions and realized that I had to try to find what was leaking and remove it if possible. After breaking a small screwdriver and bending a key for a car we sold 5 years ago, I managed to remove a nail that was about 4 inches long -- the trouble was that the rest of the air leaked out rather quickly once I pulled out the nail.

READ AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS: PLEASE NOTE - WE ONLY HAD THE 16 OZ. CAN

The directions on the can stated that the valve stem had to be in the 8 o'clock position so I had my teenage daughter back the car up until the valve stem was at the 8 o'clock position. I shook the can for over 30 seconds as Angela timed me, then I screwed the hose attachment into the valve stem. It whooshed as a stream of white, foamy liquid rushed through the transparent tubing into the tire. I could hear air rushing in with it but then I recalled what had actually happened the last time I used this stuff about 6 years ago.

You guessed it, the hole was towards the top of the tire and the foam never got there allowing the air to simply escape very nosily out the hole. Since the flat was in the rear of my front-drive Plymouth Voyager Minivan, I drove it to a gas station that I knew had air, about 6 miles away. I went about 25 mph and many people hailed me as they drove alongside to inform me that I had a flat tire.

BUT THEN SOMETHING GOOD HAPPENED

By the time I reached the Chevron Station with the air, still some 20 miles from our home, I was convinced that I had turned the flat tire into spaghetti and that we would miss the bus. Well, I am happy to report that this was not the case. From traveling slowly, the tire had circulated that white sealant foam and had heated up some due to the extra friction caused by running without air. I filled the tire up and to my surprise there was no sound of escaping air. The sealant held and I drove, at a somewhat reduced speed, the remaining 18-20 miles in about 38 minutes to get home about 2 minutes ahead of the bus.

BOTTOM LINE: HAVE AN AIR SOURCE NEARBY IF YOU PULL OUT THE NAIL

This stuff does work, but after you pull out a nail from your tire it may be rather difficult to get it to hold the air before it can circulate and heat up within the tire. This was my actual experience with this exact product today, and it is consistent with what happened 6 years ago. In short, have an air supply lined-up when you insert the sealant as close as possible to where you remove the nail and insert the sealant. This will reduce the risk of running the tire flat and rendering it unserviceable. If you do this, you stand an excellent chance of executing a fast emergency repair that anybody can manage and, like me, you too might save the day.

Q Industries MF1089 MasterFlow Twin Air Compressor Review

Bought Viair 300 this Dec/09 and 2 weeks later a superflow MF 1089 for my son. I decided to compare the inflation pressure attained by each compressor at a run time of 90 seconds for each. Using my spare tire 245-45-18 deflated down to zero PSI.
My results:Viair 300 attained 32.5 PSI at 90 seconds.
MF-1089 attaine 35.5 PSI at 90 seconds.
Durability and reliability are different issues and only time and usage will tell. To me, they both look well made. Viair is a single compressor and MF-1089 is double.
Viair weighs about 8 Lbs & MF about 18 Lbs. Viair has standard quick connectors while MF.s is not. It.s their own but it's well made. MF 1089 has more versatilities with their tire chuck connectors and is priced less than Viair.
My personal preference: MF 1089.
